Gill convenes IHF’s AGM
NEW DELHI: The President of the suspended Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), Mr. K.P.S. Gill, has convened the annual general meeting (AGM) of the IHF here on September 17.
The agenda for the AGM includes adoption of the accounts of three financial years (2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08), appointment of an auditor, nomination of representatives to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and pending legal cases and IOA’s action against the IHF.
After bribery charges came up against the then Secretary General of the IHF, Mr. K. Jothikumaran, the IOA had suspended the hockey body in April and had set up a five-member ad hoc committee to look after the affairs of the sport.
Later, the International Hockey Federation recognised a body named Hockey India as the authorised entity to run the game in the country. The IOA ad hoc committee and the women’s hockey federation together came under the new body. The official confirmation to this is expected to come at the IOA’s General Assembly scheduled in November.
Challenging the suspension, the IHF has filed a case in the Delhi High court. — Sports Reporter

From trains to hockey sticks
Posted online: Thursday , August 28, 2008 at 12:55:42
Beginning this week, we introduce a new column featuring facts about the Indian Railways. We are thankful to Mayank Tiwari, director of National Rail Museum , New Delhi for extending his support and helping us put together fascinating details about the Railways.
Well-known for his exploits on the hockey field, few are aware that Leslie Walter Claudius started his hockey career with the Railways. The first hockey player to represent the country in four Olympics and win as many medals, it was a fortuitous incident that lead to Leslie Claudius taking up hockey at the highest level. In the year 1946, 19-year old Leslie was representing the Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) in football. During a Beighton Cup hockey match in Calcutta, Leslie was watching BNR play, when one of the players in the hockey team was injured. Fortunately for Leslie and for the country, no immediate replacement was on hand and the captain, Dickie Carr, another Olympian and one who knew Leslie well, thrust a hockey stick towards him and asked him to play.
The rest is history. As a permanent right half-back, Claudius represented India at the 1948, 1952, 1956 and 1960 Olympics, winning four medals, including three golds. His only regret: his team in the last Games in Rome (1960) won silver, under his captaincy.

Hockey’s golden era
The centenary celebrations of the Bengal Hockey Association were held in La Martiniere for Boys School since it has been one of the premiere institutions promoting hockey for many years now. The interactive session expressed the fact that everyone is worried about earning something from a sport. Gone is the opinion of people that sports were played for fun and as a form of improving one’s fitness levels. The audiovisual presentation “When we were kings” illustrated the glory days of hockey. As many as 140 schools came together on this great occasion of the centenary year of hockey. Many veteran players of that golden period were present and were honoured with a memento of their glorious days as young and talented players of hockey. The presentation paid heartfelt tribute to all veteran hockey players of the once famous Indian hockey team like Dhanraj Pillai, who captained the team, Brandon Claudius, Gurbux Singh, Vir Bahadur Chettri, and many other players. Gurbux Singh and Vir Bahadur Chettri displayed some of the artifacts like the shoes they had worn, team coats, medals et al. The presentation consisted of veteran players varying opinions on their game including the golden age of hockey and their victories against America and other countries. This was also an event where they encouraged and promoted hockey amongst the children of today. Of course very few reputed schools have the space to promote this game. The quiz round focussed on India and its participation in the Montreal and Moscow Olympics of ‘76 and ‘80. The winners of the quiz round were Assembly of God Church School and Khalsa Model School.
Mr Vir Bahadur Chettri Had said, “People are using sport as a passport to qualify for jobs and gain placements in renowned Institutions.” He said “the lack of facilities including astro turf and practice space has resulted in India not being selected in this year’s Olympics in Beijing.” He also said “hockey implements and techniques have evolved over the years and are now beginning to evolve with cultural differences in Asia and Europe thus hockey is being evolved to suit the culture of the country.” The final event that topped the show was the photographs which Gurbux Singh shared with the children of the various schools of their golden days. These veterans of the “Golden Age of Hockey” deserve a standing ovation for their effort and the glory they have brought to the Indian hockey team.
