GURGAON: A golden goal by Jai Karan clinched the title for India Colts as it beat Bharat Petroleum 3-2 in the final of the Jindal Steel 45th Nehru hockey tournament at the Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.
In a contest where Bharat Petroleum was able to infuse life into the proceedings with goals that jolted the Colts out of stupour, there was no doubt about the relative merits of the two teams.
The young boys in the Colts squad were quite sharp and their energy ensured that the team emerged victor, as expected lines, though it was held 1-1 at halftime and 2-2 at the end of the regulation period.
For the connoisseurs and the few hundred spectators assembled at the arena, the match did not rise to expected levels, owing to the long spells of action without direction, but the goals did make it a memorable affair.
It was India Colts that shot ahead in the first minute as Danish Mujtaba scored out of a melee.
Sharp response
To its credit, Bharat Petroleum showed the urgency and forced a series of penalty corners in response to the goal. It succeeded in converting its fourth, in the 22nd minute, as Gurpreet Singh dragged the ball home on to the board.
Into the second half, India Colts pressed harder, though the repeated raids ended up being ably thwarted by the Petroleum goalkeeper Swinder Singh.
Skipper Diwakar Ram converted the team’s second penalty corner, with a shoulder high drag that beat the defence, 13 minutes into the second half.
The problem with India Colts was that it tended to relax a bit up front and tried to bolster its defence every time it struck a goal, and that opened the avenues for Bharat Petroleum.
After a couple of abortive attempts, especially by Tushar Khandekar who could not beat the goalkeeper after doing all the hard work, Petroleum struck the equaliser as Amar Aiyamma deflected a crisp shot from Gurpreet Singh.
Falling back
Both the teams played out time thereafter, though it had to be conceded that Bharat Petroleum was quite sharp in thwarting Colts’ fourth penalty corner, as goalkeeper Swinder Singh deflected a sharp strike from Diwakar Ram.
Thereafter, when it was just about time for the whistle to signal the second half of extra time, Jai Karan made a smart connection, even as the Bharat Petroleum players rushed to the umpire, trying in vain to establish that there was no touch to the goal.
The champion team was presented Rs. 200,000 apart from the Nehru Gold Trophy and the Japan Trophy.
Bharat Petroleum, runner-up for the second year in succession, was presented Rs. 100,000 and the Nehru Silver Cup.
The champion last year, Punjab and Sind Bank that beat Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) XI 2-1, following two goals by Navpreet Singh including the golden goal, in the match for the third place, was awarded Rs. 50,000.

Bickering in Indian hockey behind Jr team's tour cancellation?
By ANISUDDIN KHAN submitted 1 day 17 hours ago

KARACHI - The Pakistan Hockey Federation PHF should partially share the blame for the cancellation of Indian junior hockey team's visit to Pakistan early this month but reports reaching here from across the border give the hint that power tussle between Indian ad hoc body which replaced an elected Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) led by KPS Gill could have also contributed in the fiasco.
The PHF, which hastily announced the details of the tour without waiting for confirmation of no objection from Indian foreign office for the tour, may have been a reason for the cancellation of the tour hours before the Indian juniors were to cross over into Pakistan on November 10.
However, new information coming out from India hint that power struggle between ad hoc hockey body headed by Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi and elected president of the IHF, KPS Gill may have also influenced Indian foreign office decision to call off the tour.
The calling off of the visit caused a minimum loss of Rs. eight million to the PHF which was already in advance stage of organising the five-match series when the cancellation came as bolt from the blue.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) dissolved the elected IHF after India failed to qualify for Beijing Olympics after a poor performance at the Olympic qualifying round in Santiago, Chile and appointed an ad hoc body to run the game which has given eight gold medals to once formidable India in Olympics. India won its last Olympic gold at 1980 boycotted Moscow Olympics. Pakistan stayed away from Moscow for political reasons as a protest against invasion of Afghanistan by then Soviet Union. Since then Indian hockey was on constant decline.

Coach Kaushik zeroes in on video analysis for practice
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Bangalore: The support staff promised to national coach MK Kaushik before he embarked upon his journey to Bangalore is gradually growing. Former international Sandeep Somesh and goalkeeper coach Khalid Modi have already joined him at the camp in SAI, South Centre. And, if the Indian Women’s Hockey Federation (IWHF) is swift enough, he will get the video analyst and the software too in quick time to dissect practice and match sessions. Two demonstrations from video analyst and software engineer A Prasanna, who was with former men’s hockey coach Joaquim Carvalho until the Olympic qualifiers early this year, convinced Kaushik that the software was good enough to provide him with instant inputs. “Prasanna introduced new aspects to his software and gave us a good demonstration a few days ago. I am impressed with the product and have informed the IWHF. It all depends on his contract with the government now. He is scheduled to be with us until the 2010 Commonwealth Games and I’ll be happy if he starts work as early as possible.” Prasanna’s software did little to earn the admiration of both Kaushik and men’s coach in-charge Harendra Singh during the first demonstration, it is learnt. “We were getting enough material for analysis before and after the match. But we wanted him to give us inputs when the game was on. The second demonstration was much better,” said Kaushik. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Somesh and Modi has helped Kaushik delegate work in a more systematic fashion. “Sandeep will concentrate on the defence but I would expect him to contribute a lot more. He has already begun watching the tapes that we have. We value his inputs highly as he understands the concepts of modern hock ey well,” said Kaushik, who was Somesh’s coach at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games, where India won the gold. Somesh, who is returning to mainstream hockey after a hiatus, said he was keen to contribute equally to the women’s team. “My teams play in the KSHA league and so I am regularly in touch with the game. I have great respect for the national coach and hope to add value to the team with my inputs.”

VPA trio rule
Yuvraj, Vikas and Sunil enable team to enter senior finals
Avinash Rajput

It was the Vikram Pillay Academy (VPA) A trio, Yuvraj Valmiki, Vikas Pillay and Sunil Bernards action, which enabled their team enter the finals of the Saros N Kothavalla Hockey Tournament at the Dhyanchand stadium here on Tuesday.
The VPA made it to the final round of the senior division category after defeating Green Meadows 4-1.
Yuvraj Valmiki along with striker Vikas Pillay drew the first blood to punch in the first goal in the 6th minute of the game, for the VPA. But, it took not very long for Green Meadows Kamlesh Oswal to score an equaliser in the 19th minute and made sure his side give a tough fight till the game went into the second half.
But, the action continued in the second half too, as VPA scored another goal in the first minute as Raju B made an easy finish of a fed by Sunil Bernard and put his side one up.
It was the same Valmiki-Pillay duo amalgamation which infiltrated the Green Meadows defence after Valmiki netted an easy finish in the 40th minute. Another goal came up for VPA when Vikas Pillay this time combined with Sunil Bernard to add one more goal to the tally which took the final score to 4-1.
Now, VPA will play the winner of Railway Police and Bombay Engineering Group (BEG) in the senior division final.
In the junior division encounter the Rovers Academy booked their place in the final after knocking out Shilloh Sports Club 3-1. The Rovers Academy was put under instant pressure by the Shilloh Sports Club when Johnson Kullu converted a penalty corner through a pass form Vijay Baa in the 10th minute.
Failing to capitalise on the early lead the Shilloh side conceded a goal in the 15th minute when right winger Santosh Kasture levelled the score through a pass from Sachin Kamble. The 19th minute goal by Santosh Gaikwad received a prolonged applause as he dodged passed three defenders and struck a goal after the fruity less chase by Shilloh custodian Roshan Bage. Prashant Bage added one more goal to the total as his team entered the final round. The Rovers Academy will play the winners of Rakshak Sports Club and VPA B in the summit clash.
Senior mens Nationals may see light again

The tourney, which was kept in the cupboard since a long time, is looking for a revival

Joe Williams

The Senior National Hockey championship, which has been kept in the cupboard for long, will be soon reopened, if everything goes well, according to the newly appointed ad-hoc committee member of the Indian Olympic Association.
“There are many tour lined up especially for the juniors. After the Argentina, Europe and the four-nation series back home, we will try and accommodate this prestigious Senior National championship, which has been forgotten for over years,” said Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of the ad-hoc committee while talking to DNA.
The championship which was to be held in the month of December 2008 has now been differed to January and will be played at the newly laid poly gras stadium in the renovated Shiv Chattrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi which is located in front of the badminton stadium.
“We did speak about the nationals, and the IOC chief Suresh Kalmadi has confirmed that the nationals will be held in the month of January,” said the secretary of the Maharashtra Hockey Association, Ikram Khan.
This will turn a new leaf for the national sport as the former Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) had completely ignored this championship. Though, the IHF which was headed by KPS Gill, claim that the last championship was held in the year 2006, there was no participation from all the states.
Recalling his 20 years of run at the Senior Nationals, Ajit Pal Singh, the captain of the World Cup winning team said that because this championship couldnt see the light, many youngsters lost the chance to make their careers, as this was one of the qualification criteria for them to get jobs.
“It was a graduation of a sort as a national player automatically gets qualified for job in both government and private sectors,” said Ajit Pal Singh.
Surface laid at Balewadi, tribute paid to the game
But the surrounding area is layered with debris and can damage the turf even with mild wind blowing
Avinash Rajput
The wait is over as the year long linger for a Polygras surface has finally come true for the hockey players at the Balewadi sports complex, the second of its kind in the city.
Located in front of the badminton stadium, in the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, this full fledged surface will be inaugurated on Tuesday.
The completion of the work has got cheer amongst the Krida Prabodhini players who waited for this international standard ground for four years. “This ground was something that made me shift from Aurangabad to Pune. It would give our team good exposure as it suits international standards,” said Franklyn Fernandes of Krida Prabodhani.
The ground brings tall promises from the sports authorities as they have a whole set program lined up for the coming years. “The infrastructure will surely help the budding hockey players from Pune and other cities from the state,” said Laxmikant Deshmukh, director of sports. “With the help of Sports Authority of India we have planned to conduct coaching camps and we have also planned to host some national and international events,” Deshmukh added.
The ground however lacks basic facilities like audience stand, adequate water supply through pipelines and players changing room. “The wrestling venue is just few meters from the ground and hence we have decided to make use of the wrestling venues changing room for the time being,” Deshmukh informed.
The brand new ground faces a severe threat from the surrounding area which is layered with debris and can damage the turf even with mild wind blowing. The water spewed on the ground come from a water tanker as the already installed water tank capacity is not adequate to serve the entire ground. “We are facing an acute water shortage and a bigger capacity tank needs to be installed. We will continue using the water tankers for ground as we have one year contract,” Deshmukh explained.
The total surface area of the ground is 101.4 x 65 meters whereas the playing area is 91.40 x 55 meters. The turf installation was done by Sports Technology International, Australia and the turf brand name is Polygras.
Valmiki scripts Victory
Slams three goals to trash Metro SC
DNA Correspondent
In spite of playing with a 10-member squad for almost 45 minutes, Vikram Pillay Academy had no problem in thrashing Metro Sports Club, as they cantered into the last four round with a 6-1 win in the Saros N Kothavalla Hockey Tournament at the Dhyanchand stadium here on Monday.
VPAs forward Cyril Vanarnd failed to make it for the match on time and when he reported the match was almost over. However, his absence didnt cost much for the team as the right inner Yuvraj Valmiki did the job for the winners. Valimiki slammed three goals, while Manoj Pillay scored a brace.
With the Pillay brothers Vikas and Vinods presence the young team of VPA outshined their opponents with swift attacks from both the flanks as well as from the centre. “We maintained the speed of the game right from the beginning and it looked like we were playing in a Mumbai league match, as such a speedy game is the speciality of Mumbai teams,” quipped Shafiqe Shaikh, captain VPA. “Valmiki and Alwyin played an outstanding game. I hope they will repeat their performance in the next games too,” he added.
It was Valmiki who stunned their opponents with a cracking goal in the second minute of the game. He received a good pass from BK Muthannna and it was a flawless shot which rested in the net and left the Metro keeper as a mere spectator.
In the 9th minute, Valmiki launched another attack from the right flank and found a gap in Metros defence. His pass was nicely received by Manoj Pillay who took the opportunity to double up the lead.
Valmiki kept the Metro player on their toes as he struck again in the 11th minute and scored his second goal, which gave VPA a vital 3-0 lead.
The second half was simply dominated by VPA players as they were reinforced with the forward player Cyril. In contrast, Metro players were struggling to match with the pace of the game and surrendered tamely to their rivals. Manoj Pillay added one more goal in the 36th minute on the feed from Vinod Pillay, followed by Alwyn Alexander who scored in the 41st minute. Valmiki made the matter worst for Metro as he scored his third goal of the match in the 56th minute to seal the victory. Sanjay Kollayya was the lone scorer for Metro SC.
Result: VPA: 6 (Yuvraj Valmiki 2nd, 11th, 56th; Manoj Pillay 9th, 36th; Alwyn Alexander 41st ) bt Metro SC A: (Sanjay Kollayya 43rd).

India may visit South Africa in January
23 Nov 2008, 2302 hrs IST, V Narayan Swamy,TNN
BANGALORE: The Indian hockey team, in all probability, may visit South Africa for test matches in January ahead of the two four-nation tournaments in Punjab.
The ad-hoc committee managing hockey affairs in the country, which was studying a proposal by the Pakistan Hockey Federation for a test series around the same period, now feels that it has to keep an alternative ready if the Pakistan tour is shot down by the Ministry of External Affairs.

A few weeks ago, the MEA had refused clearance to the junior hockey team, citing security fears. Even the cricket tour to Pakistan is in the balance with the MEA yet to review the situation. Ad-hoc committee members are expected to follow up the matter with the South African hockey federation. South Africa, who finished at the bottom (12th) in the WC (2006) and Olympic (2008), are rebuilding their team and keen on a few exposure matches too, it is learnt.
The move is in sync with coach in-charge H Singh’s perception that India will have to play internationals so as to keep themselves match fit for the two four-nation events.
